  • Site Reboot: Welcome to 2026

It’s been a while since this site got some attention. After years of focusing on Azure, AI research, and the Scott and Mark Learn To podcast, I realized my personal website was still stuck in 2014. Time for a reboot.

    What’s New

The site has been completely modernized with a clean, responsive design. Here’s what you’ll find:

    • Scott & Mark Learn To — A dedicated page for the podcast I co-host with Scott Hanselman. We cover everything from vibe coding and AI safety to career growth and the history of cloud computing.
    • AI Research — My research work on LLM safety, machine unlearning, hallucination detection, and tools like RefChecker.
    • Books — The Jeff Aiken cyberthriller series (Zero Day, Trojan Horse, Rogue Code) and Windows Internals are all still here.
    • Blog — This blog, now with fresh content alongside the archives.

    A Lot Has Changed

When I last updated this site, I was primarily known for Sysinternals tools and the Jeff Aiken novel series. Since then, my focus has expanded significantly into AI. As CTO of Azure, I’ve been deeply involved in the platform’s AI infrastructure, and my personal research has centered on LLM safety — particularly machine unlearning, copyright protection in language models, and hallucination detection.

The Scott and Mark Learn To podcast with Scott Hanselman has become one of my favorite creative outlets. We dive into topics ranging from deeply technical (shared memory gRPC transports, shader programming) to the philosophical (are apps dead? what makes a good 1-1?) to the lighthearted (skincare routines, gaming hobbies).

I’ve also been doing a lot of what we call “vibe coding” — using AI to build real tools and projects. RefChecker, my academic reference validator, was built almost entirely with AI assistance, and I’ve been pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with AI-assisted development on projects like gRPC shared memory transports.

    Connect

You can find me on LinkedIn and GitHub. The podcast is available everywhere you listen to podcasts, and on YouTube.

  • My Sessions at RSA Conference US 2014

I’m excited to announce that for the third year I’ll be presenting at RSA Conference US, the largest cybersecurity in the world. Like the previous two conferences, I’m delivering a talk in the Industry Experts track, this time on cloud security. I’m also delivering a technical session on the Pass-the-Hash (PTH) threat and how corporations can defend themselves against it, including by leveraging new PTH mitigations available in Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2. I’ll of course also be doing a book signing for my novels Trojan Horse and Zero Day. Rogue Code, the third book in the Jeff Aiken series, won’t be out until May.

Here are the session abstracts and times and below them a link to the conference’s full session list.

HTA-W03 Pass-the-Hash: How Attackers Spread and How to Stop Them
    Wednesday, February 26, 2014 | 10:40am – 11:40am
Pass-the-hash transforms the breach of one machine into a total compromise of infrastructure. The publication of attacks and lack of tools to respond have forced enterprises to rely on onerous and ineffective techniques. In this talk, we will decompose the PtH threat, show how the attack is performed and how it can be addressed using new platform technologies in Windows 8.1. – See more at: http://www.rsaconference.com/events/us14/agenda/sessions/1061/pass-the-hash-how-attackers-spread-and-how-to-stop#sthash.THva3Ejr.dpuf

EXP-R01 Public Cloud Security: Surviving in a Hostile Multitenant Environment
    Thursday, February 27, 2014 | 8:00am – 9:00am
The rise of public cloud computing has brought with it a new set of security and data privacy considerations that are not widely understood. This session will describe public cloud hoster and customer threat models and explain the role in those models of encryption-at-rest, encryption-in-flight and other security best practices.

  • Trojan Horse in the News: Electric Grid Systems Hacked

In an eerie parallel to the opening chapter of Trojan Horse, last week Telvent Canada, a supplier of computer systems and software to electric companies in Canada and the US, announced that it had been hacked. Preliminary indications based on analysis by Dell suggest that the hackers are Chinese, operating in a group called the “Comment Group”. Read more here:
